Rifle calibre questions:
Before anything else ……to have your own rifle on your safari to harvest your own animals is a very personal and sentimental aspect. Since the days of the early professional elephant hunters, and later, the better known professional hunters, all have their own ideas and opinions on rifles and the best suitable calibres for different species.
With the development of fast-burning, non-corrosive powder and proper bullet construction, in my opinion, this subject, for the most part, has taken the backseat. I have shot everything from klipspringer to lion, buffalo and elephant with my.375 H&H
That being said, we at ThakaSafari’s can supply you as the client with all and every calibre needed for your hunt, and then some. Anything from a 12 gauge for birds, or a 25-06,30-06 and other for plains game, and .375 H&H mag up to 416 Taylor for the dangerous game can be supplied by us and used by you on your safari if you should choose to.
When bringing your own rifle, anything in the .308 Winchester/30-06 Springfield calibre range will be sufficient for the plains game. The minimum calibre required by law on the dangerous game is a .375 H&H magnum.
Shot placement:
Shot placement is more important and always will outweigh choice of calibre. No calibre can or will ever replace or compensate for shot placement. You will never have a second opportunity for your initial shot placement.
More often than not, the myth of a bigger calibre makes the hunter choose a weapon he/she cannot use with confidence, which results in bad performance from the shooter…… which results in bad placement, which results in wounded animals. The ethical hunter will use a rifle/calibre combination suitable for the specific situation.
